Planning a Family Photography Session?

Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Planning a family photography session might feel a little overwhelming at first — what to wear, how to prepare the kids, and how to make sure everyone’s actually enjoying it. But don’t worry — I’ve got you.

As a Nottingham family photographer (and a mum myself), I know how to turn what could be a stressful day into a relaxed, fun, and memorable experience. In this post, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know — from timing and outfits, to prepping your little ones, to what actually happens during the session — so you can show up feeling confident, calm, and ready to create something beautiful.

Let’s make this more than just a photoshoot. Let’s make it a memory.

Capturing Memories: A Personal Guide to Your Family Photography Session

Let’s be honest — life moves fast. And those sweet, in-between moments with your kids? They don’t wait. That’s why I’m a huge believer in the magic of a family photography session. It’s not just a photoshoot — it’s a chance to pause time, reconnect, and create something that’ll warm your heart every time you walk past that framed photo on the wall.

We got in contact with Marta and she gave us all the details. On the day and during the photo shoot, Marta made us feel comfortable throughout. When the photos were developed, the quality was just spectacular and we couldn't have ask for more. We appreciate the quality and price we paid.

What to Wear for Your Family Photography Session

Styling can make a big difference in your final gallery. I recommend soft, earthy tones and avoiding busy patterns. Think timeless over trendy. And don’t worry — I’ve got you covered with a wardrobe catalogue full of session-ready dresses for you.

How to Prepare Your Child for a Family Photography Session

Kids don’t need to “perform” — they just need to be themselves. But a little prep goes a long way.

That’s why I created this guide: 7 tips to prepare your child for the family photoshoot.

It’ll help you:

– Avoid meltdowns

-Set realistic expectations

-Make the experience fun (yes, FUN!)

Timing is Everything – When to Schedule Your Family Photography Session

The right time of day can make all the difference in your final photos. If you’re planning an outdoor family photography session, we’ve got a few great options. While golden hour (just before sunset) gives us dreamy, warm light, it’s not always the best for little ones.

👉 For families with small children, I usually recommend 10am. Kids are well-rested, the light is soft and beautiful, and everyone’s in good spirits — it’s the sweet spot for happy, natural photos.

When you contact me to book, we’ll chat about what works best for your family’s routine and the lighting conditions — so you don’t have to stress about a thing.

What Happens During Your Family Photography Session?

Before Session

Before your family photography session, we’ll go over everything together — the location, styling, ideas, and your vision. I’ll also ask if you have any inspirational images or ideas you’d love to bring to life. This helps me make sure I really understand the vibe you’re going for.

On the day

On the day, we keep things relaxed and fun. I’ll gently guide you through a few natural poses and activities (no stiff smiles here!) and encourage real connection, play, and emotion. Think snuggles, laughter, and genuine moments — not forced grins.

After the session

After the session, you’ll receive a preview gallery within 24 hours so you can get that first burst of excitement. Then, within two weeks, your full edited gallery will land in your inbox, ready to treasure forever. You can choose to enjoy your favourites as prints, wall art, or a beautifully curated album. More info is over on the pricing page.

Make It Meaningful: Why Family Photos Matter So Much

Displaying family photos at home can actually boost your child’s confidence. It reminds them that they’re loved, supported, and part of a story that matters. Read more about that in my post: Professional Photoshoots for Kids.

And it’s not just for the kids — it’s for you. We all need reminders of the joy and love we’re surrounded by.
