What to expect during family photography photo shoot

I have a lot of fun getting to know and photographing people. My main goal is to transfer that attitude to my client- so you and your kids walk away loving your experience.

People typically book a family photographer once a year at certain times, whether it’s the spring, the holidays or to celebrate a new addition to the family. Or maybe the family books the sessions through out the year.

I want to get to know the family briefly on the phone, learn everyone’s names and learn about what the children like to do. It is also important to know how their children typically behave in the from of the camera.

Some children love the camera during family photography sessions and others might not want anything to do with me. It is always helpful to know this information about their family photography session.

Once I can gather details from the family that will help me capture the connection and tell the story through images, I mention to them what to expect during a family photography photoshoot.

3 Tips for lifestyle Family Photography session

1. Have fun

First and foremost, getting your photos should be fun! I know it can be stressful to figure out what to wear or figure out the best location for your family photography, but hopefully, I can take the stress out of that for you and share ideas for “What to wear” Aside from that clothing doesn’t matter. What matters is that your family has fun. Have fun!

This family has children, that at the time were interested in the camera and the other times didn’t really care that much. It’s important that I keep your family close together while you keep your children engaged in fun! This can mean tickling your little guy, or seeing how he can pile up and hug on Mommy. It can also mean allowing your little guy to play with leaves and talk about the colour or shape. Or maybe your little girl just wants to be held. I’m there to document that fun for you!

2. Follow your child’s lead

Once we get the important shots out of the way, you know, the once for the grandparents with everyone looking at the camera we can relax a bit. My favourite images are always the ones where we allow the child to naturally explore and get into something he or she went to do. When we let the child lead the way, they will be naturally motivated to interact and play, and this helps to bring out natural expressions from the child as well.

3. Engage your child in an activity

Location for Family Photography

The first thing to remember when it comes to picking a location for your family photography session is figuring out the vibe you want. Do you want to go on an adventure or have a quiet snuggle family photography session at home, or posed studio session in painterly style? When you know the vibe and the style you want, that makes it easier to narrow down choices.

My advice to you is pick something yourkids will enjoy. The more excited they are by their surroundings, the happier they will be. If they love throwing rocks into water (what kid doesn’t?) then we can find cute creek! the key is finding somewhere that is interesting enough to keep them happy!

5 Tips for families

  1. Coordinate your outfits by finding a colour palette you love and finding pieces that compliment one another. Avoid match-match and black as your main colour. Soft muted colours and neutral colours look great.

2. Layer and add accessories with a hat, headbands, necklace, jacket or scarf.

3. Wear clothes that are fashionable, yet still functional for the location. Keep in mind we will be moving around!

4. When it comes to patterns, a good rule of thumb is to have one or two pattered outfits for every three people included in the session. Floral prints, polka dots, and plaids work great! Also, avoid large logos or licensed clothing.

5. Shoes! Remember that you’ll want them to be comfortable as we move around, but please stay away from character-themed shoes, athletic shoes and bulky soles.
